Here are some great Winter tips for everyone, regardless of their heating source!
Get a heating system tune-up
Keeping your heating system in top-shape will ensure you get efficient performance out of every dollar you spend on heating this winter.
Open and close your drapes
Open curtains and shades when the sun is out to warm your home. Close them when the sun goes down to reduce heat loss through drafty windows.
Turn down the thermostat
Bundle up at night and save! Also turn down the heat when you are away from home. Even *slightly* lowering your thermostat during the day could save you up to two percent on your heating bill!
Insulate pipes and ducts
To guard against heat loss and to prevent them from freezing, be sure your pipes and ducts are well insulated.
Ensure your doorways aren’t drafty
Stop heat loss by eliminating any and all gaps between your door and the threshold. Use a seal that can be attached to the bottom of the door – ideally it should brush up against the threshold to fill the gap.
Seal all the gaps
Caulk or re-caulk any exterior spaces between the windows and the walls of your home.
Batten down the hatches
Close your kitchen vent, fireplace damper and closet doors. Also remove, cover or close air conditioning units and vents when not in use.
Don’t block the airflow
Do not place furniture in front of radiators or vent grills – it will block heat from circulating properly.
